🌿 How to Care for Phalaenopsis Potted Orchids: Keep Your Blooms Thriving

Orchids are the queens of elegance in the floral world, and among them, the Phalaenopsis orchid (also known as the Moth Orchid) reigns supreme. Known for their long-lasting blooms and graceful appearance, they make stunning gifts and are surprisingly easy to care for — once you know the basics.

At Floris Istana, we adore these tropical beauties and want to help you keep your potted Phalaenopsis orchids healthy and blooming for months. Here’s your go-to orchid care guide!

🌞 1. Let There Be (Indirect) Light

Phalaenopsis orchids love bright, indirect sunlight. Place them near a window with filtered light — east or north-facing windows are ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch their leaves.

Pro tip: If the leaves are dark green, they might not be getting enough light. Bright green leaves are a happy orchid sign!

💧 2. Water Wisely (Not Too Much!)

Overwatering is the #1 way to accidentally kill your orchid. These tropical plants don’t like soggy roots.

  • Water once a week in a humid environment, or every 4–5 days in a dry air-conditioned room.

  • Water in the morning to allow excess moisture to evaporate.

  • Use room-temperature water, and avoid wetting the leaves or center of the plant.

Let the pot drain completely — never let it sit in water.

💨 3. Keep It Breezy, Not Drafty

Orchids appreciate airflow around their roots. That’s why they’re often planted in clear pots with drainage holes. Good airflow helps prevent rot and fungus.

Keep them away from:

  • Strong drafts

  • Direct air from air-conditioners or heaters

🌡️ 4. The Right Temperature Makes a Difference

Phalaenopsis orchids prefer temperatures between:

  • 18°C – 25°C (65°F – 77°F)

  • They can handle cooler temps at night, but avoid anything below 15°C

Consistency is key. Sudden temperature changes can cause buds to drop.

🌸 5. Feed Them Occasionally

Like any diva, orchids enjoy a little pampering.

  • Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (like 20-20-20) once every 2–3 weeks

  • Fertilize only when the orchid is actively growing — skip it when it’s dormant

✂️ 6. Post-Bloom Pruning Tips

When your orchid finishes blooming:

  • Cut the flower spike above the node (the small bump) closest to the base

  • This may encourage a second bloom from the same spike!

  • If the spike turns brown, cut it off completely

🪴 Bonus Tip: Repot Every 1–2 Years

Over time, the potting media (usually bark or moss) breaks down and holds too much moisture. Repot your orchid into fresh orchid mix every couple of years, ideally after blooming.

🌼 Enjoy the Beauty of Orchids for Longer

Phalaenopsis orchids don’t just look luxurious — they’re surprisingly low-maintenance once you understand their rhythm. Whether you're adding a touch of calm to your home or giving a thoughtful gift, these blooms deliver elegance and longevity in one beautiful package.
